Coding in Scratch

1-on-1 online coding lessons in Scratch; students use block coding and build game and fun projects, guided by Ivy League students and recent graduates.

About Course

Coding, or computer programming, is an increasingly critical skill, and Scratch is a great way to get kids started in coding.  Scratch is developed by MIT to help kids learn coding; it is easy to learn and allows for boundless creativity.  Students can create games like Flappy Bird, Crossy Road and Fruit Ninja for their friends to play, or create animation and tell their own stories.

This course is conducted 1-on-1, taught by students or recent graduates from top schools such as the Ivy League, Caltech and Berkeley.  The weekly or 2x/week lessons focus on cultivating students’ love for coding.  Kids first learn basic coding logics, then work on projects or games to apply these logic and codes.  Lessons move at the individual student’s pace and gradually increases in complexity.  Since it’s 1-on-1, students are encouraged to pursue their own ideas with the guidance of the teacher, and are given coding assignments in between each lessons.  Each lesson also comes with a personalized lesson summary, recapping materials learned and detailing the coding assignment.

Coding logic introduced includes:

  • Data types
  • Functions & arguments
  • If-then-else conditional arguments
  • Loops and nested loops
  • Sprite Creation for Object Oriented Programming
  • X-Y coordinate plane

Games and projects that can be created as students advance in the curriculum include, but are not limited to:

  • Crossy Road game
  • Virtual piano
  • Flappy Bird
  • Animation / Story Telling
  • Fruit Ninja

Some students like gaming, some like music, and others like fashion or story telling.  The beauty of this program is that the curriculum can be tailored to suit individual student’s interests and learning style in order to cultivate students’ love for coding.  With top teachers that also act as role models, this is a fantastic program for kids to get ahead!
